My deepest condolences. Mr. R had a great impact in my life, despite my resistance.
I can still fondly remember discussions on Canterbury tales, Beowulf,
and numerous Shakespearean works while in his English class at
Alconbury. I always liked that he kept the desks in a circle so he
could engage all of us...proding us about hidden meanings, olde English
vernacular, or intended imagery. I'll remeber him as a chaperone during
trips to Canterbury and the MUN...and I'll hope that my children are
lucky enough to have teachers as wonderful as Mr. R.

One of
the best pieces of advice I ever received was Abjure these foolsh tears
forever! It was a comment on a paper I turned in to Mr. Reddington back
when I was dotting the i and the j with big circles.
I haven't forgotten that sentence after 30 years and it always makes me remember what a great teacher he was.
(And I've always wondered... he knew that most of the students cheated on the memorized Shakespeare paragraphs didn't he?)

I knew Mr. Reddington had lived a long and full life, but I was struck hard when I learned of his death. Mr. Reddington had a significant influence on my education as student and as a person. On Christmas Eve, we lost one of the best educators I have ever known. He was my college prep English teacher, and not only is my enjoyment of literature, research and academic writing largely due to his teaching, but he was also a role model for me as a future teacher. I will carry him in my memory forever. These pages are testimony to his influence - he will be missed greatly and fondly remembered, and I know the impact he leaves behind will continue to change and improve the lives of others.

Mr. R was an example of who an excellent teacher should be. He led us through the classics with an unmeasurable passion and taught us all never to judge a book by it's cover. My thoughts are with the Reddington family. May you always know how much he impacted all of us. AHS c/o 85

One has many different teachers in their educational "career" when growing up in the military. It isn't easy to remember all of your teachers' names over the years. It takes someone truly special to leave an impression on a youthful mind. Mr. Reddington was that truly special teacher for me. His teachings and good moral compass will stay with me throughout the rest of my days. It was a blessing to be his student and an ever so small part of his life, which had an extremely large impact on mine! Thank you, Mr. Reddington! You will be greatly missed. To Mrs. Reddington and family, my heartfelt condolences.

Mr. R was my 12th grade English teacher at Alconbury High School in England and was the epitome of a true educator! His teaching style, compassion and quick wit left a lasting impression on me. My love for reading was only enhanced further as his student, and my love of learning has become a strength in how I tackle life's challenges and curiosities. I found a deeper love of poetry from Mr. R and have journals full of poems I've written or clipped to always enjoy the beauty of the written word. Heaven certainly gained an angel that I was privileged to know on Earth. Rest In Peace! Many prayers to the family and may your memories bring you comfort and peace.

There are no words to express the sorrow I feel at the loss of a man I am happy to be able to call friend. Mr. and Mrs. Reddington are shining examples of what a teachable mentor should be. The love and respect he showed his students, and that we feel for him is without measure. He instilled a lifelong love of learning that continues, and his quick wit and kindness will not be forgotten. Thank you to Mrs. R. and the entire Reddington family for sharing him with us. RIP.

Mr. R
is still my favorite teacher. I already liked reading but i really
learned to love and appreciate the great classics in literature and I
owe all that to Mr. R. I had to be out of school for a couple of weeks
due to me being sick. I was so far behind but Mr R took the time to
help me get caught up not just in his classes but all the others.
To all of his family, thank you so much for sharing Mr R and his awesome wife with us all.
Fly high with the Angels Mr R!
You're so loved and missed!

John Reddington was the finest example of a great teacher. He inspired and encouraged thousands of students to love learning. He was also a model and an inspiration to his colleagues, and, equally important, he was simply a wonderful man.

I've known John since 1971 and found that he had the patience of Job, intellect of Moynihan, vocabulary of Churchill, and the humor of Twain. He was laconic, discussed issues without polemics, and was an inspiration to students, colleagues, friends, and family. I shall miss him.

I was in the class of 1991 at Alconbury. Mr. R. was a great teacher and great man. I have thought of him and Mrs. R. often throughout the years. He was definitely one of my favorites. He made a big impact in my life because he was instrumental in my decision to go to University of Michigan. I remember discussing my college choices with him and Mrs. R. and I will be forever grateful they led me there. He will be missed. Thinking of the Reddington family.

"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by,and that has made all the difference." Robert Frost. I had Mr. Reddington for 9th and 12th grade English. Memorized this in 9th grade. Will never forget that and his love of Shakespeare. RIP and blessings to your family and all those you taught!! Amy Johnsrud White, AHS Class of 90.
