Thomas J. Richards, Jr.
Thomas J. Richards, Jr., 80, of Frostburg,
passed away peacefully Monday, May 7, 2018 at Western MD Regional
Medical Center.
Born Sept. 27, 1937, in Frostburg, he was the oldest son of the late Thomas J. and Maudella (Williams) Richards. He is also preceded in death by his brother and sister in law, Ronald Lee "Hose" and Sharon Lee (Festerman) Richards; and their infant daughter, April Ann.
Tommy John was a graduate of Beall High School, class of 1955. He obtained his Bachelor of Education from Frostburg State Teacher's College in 1959 and earned his Master of Education from Wayne State University in 1976. He began his teaching career at Marley Jr. High School in Glen Burnie, from 1959-1962. Tom applied to teach military dependents overseas and accepted a position at Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan from 1962-1963. He was transferred to Weisbaden, Germany where he taught U.S. History until his retirement in 1992. Teaching abroad had many perks and Tom was able to travel to many different countries where he met several lifelong friends.
Tom was a lover of classic films as well as classic film stars, he was always quoting famous lines. He also loved to entertain everyone with his stories of travel and life overseas, he was an avid swimmer, loved the sun and a great book.
Surviving are his niece, Leann (Richards) Dennison and husband Eric; nephew, Ronald Scott Richards and wife Laura and their children Shawn and Christopher, all of Frostburg. He is also survived by his companion and special friend Martha Ann Lewis and her dog, Heidi Star, of Frostburg; as well as many cousins and friends.
Tom was cremated in accordance with his wishes.
Friends and Family will be received at Durst Funeral Home, 57 Frost Ave, Frostburg, MD on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a time of sharing by family members will be held at 1 p.m.
